Fri, July 11, 2008 - 10:49 AMi think that he's obnoxious and a crypto-creationist. -
-
Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 3:45 PMcrypto-creationist!!! hahaha!! i like him actually, but i do disagree on his seemingly compulsive attachment to "Progress." i agree that cooperation to a degree is an inevitable and predictable consequence of evolution, but so is coalition dissolution and conflict. true though, humanity has become less violent over time, and globalism will probably lead to greater harmony, if we don't all die first. -

Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 7:02 PMhe believes that this supposed directionality of evolution is evidence for a creator god. he's a deist and an annoying one. did you see his interview with daniel dennett i posted?

Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 7:50 PMyeah, i've seen it. i've seen all the meaningoflife.tv interviews with scientists, not all with the theologians and historians yet. i've also seen his TED talk and read most of nonzero, along with essays. he does get pretty excited about evolution's tendency to accumulate design. i think it's cool, too, but not evidence of any larger purpose or metadesign, or intentionality. i don't think his god is a personal one, though, and i'm not sure he thinks the directionality was created by a being proper. he seems to think it's just a magical aspect of how things unfold. can you point me to evidence for this claim about him? -

check out his talk on "optimism." not much magical thinking really, in my book.

Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 12:27 PMwell right, that's why he's a crypto-creationist not a regular one. he's attracted to a materialist view but can't let go of his emotional attachment to magical thinking. so he falls back on a vague, generalized, implicit spinoza-esque deism. personally i think that that "depersonalization" of the god concept is a contentless rhetorical sleight-of-hand. and as you say it is magical thinking and therefore to my mind indistinguishable in terms of substance from a standard creationist view, since magical thinking is my main objection to theism not whether or not the prime factor is personalized or not.
check out this one with john maynard smith.

his harping on whether or not smith "misses a higher purpose" is so obnoxious. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 12:31 PMi agree with you. just as creepy is maynard smith's inability to feel magical wonder. well, perhaps that is even creepier to me. -
-
Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 12:36 PMwhat is the difference between "wonder" and "magical wonder"? -

Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 2:20 PMoh you mean when he said he thought his gene for awe had been left out? i'm not sure what he means by awe. -

Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 3:10 PMa fundamental astonishment at the miracle of the fact of the universe? something like that, i would say. -
-
Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 3:33 PMpersonally i experience it sometimes as a vertigo more than an astonishment. haha. -

Re: interview with e.o. wilson
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 3:42 PMi also tap into the utter and complete indifference and pre-valueness of existence regularly. it's rather, well, valueless!

What do you mean by "miracle?" Extremely improbably or beyond your comprehension?
