bisexual species: unorthodox sex in the animal kingdom

i find myself rather confused by this statement in the article: "animals may engage in same-sex couplings... to maintain fecundity when opposite-sex partners are unavailable." ummm, am i missing the meaning of the term "fecundity"? driscoll says it a couple times in the article, and i can't understand what the hell she means by it.
